Which ‘You’s are you carrying around with you?
I was invited to a friend’s pool the other day and while I was getting ready I was noticing all the things I don’t like about my body. I won’t list them here but I know everyone has a list for themselves. And then like magic my favourite song came on - ‘Everyone is free to wear sunscreen’. And if you haven’t heard it, listen to it… NOW!
The line, “Use your body every way you can, don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think; it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own,” struck me hard.
Here’s the thing: if you can imagine yourself all grown up,what would that version of You say to the now You? And when you were a kid, what would that You say to you now?
The old one would say, “Who cares if you still have 5 pounds to lose?”, “Who cares so and so is going to be there, they never even noticed you?”
And then later in the pool the child me says, “Who cares about wet hair and smudged make up, DO THE CANNON BALL!!!”
So all I’m saying is we should consider which You’s you are listening to. Because Today You doesn’t have the only perspective you’ll ever have.
